On 5 April 2023 the Liberal Party caucus voted to reject the Voice proposal in the referendum. Peter Dutton called the government’s plan ‘divisive’, declared it would not deliver ‘outcomes to people on the ground’ and put forward an alternative model. Danny Eastwood defends a Voice model designed by First Nations leaders, and points out the effect of negative talk about the Voice referendum on First Nations people.
