Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was invited to the 2022 NATO Summit in Madrid as part of the first formal Asia-Pacific delegation to attend. Australia is not a member of NATO, but has permanent observer status. After the summit, Albanese visited Kyiv, where he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and pledged further assistance for the country as it continued to defend itself against the Russian invasion.
