In April 2023 the federal government announced plans to part-fund a new 23,000-seat AFL stadium at a waterfront site in Hobart. The total cost of the project would be $715 million, with a significant proportion funded by the state government. Chris Downes makes the point that it would ultimately be everyday Tasmanians who would foot the bill. In May 2023 thousands of Tasmanians protested against the new stadium, with many suggesting the money could be better spent on local affordable housing.
