In January 2023 the sudden death of Liberal Senator Jim Molan, who represented New South Wales, left a Senate vacancy. Michael Kroger, former president of the Victorian Liberal Party, suggested in a media interview that the vacancy should be filled by former prime minister Tony Abbott.
