By the time of the federal election, Australia’s relationship with China had become positively icy over concerns including national security, COVID-19 and Chinese influence in the Asia-Pacific region. The Albanese government looked to ‘change the tone’ of the relationship while remaining firm on concerns about human rights and regional security.
