Ultimately, all states and territories, except the Australian Capital Territory, voted against the proposed constitutional amendment. Nationwide, the ‘Yes’ vote was 39.4 per cent. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had visited key states and rural areas in the weeks before the vote to promote the ‘Yes’ case. But Mark Knight suggests that the overgrown grass in the PM’s front yard shows he had neglected issues closer to home.
