In June 2023 independent Senator Lidia Thorpe made allegations in the Senate against then Liberal Senator David Van. She accused him of sexually harassing her and said Australia’s parliament was ‘not a safe place’ for women to work. Following Thorpe’s allegation, former Liberal senator Amanda Stoker issued a statement claiming that Van had once inappropriately touched her. A third accusation followed, and Van was stood down from the Liberal Party.
