July 2023 was the world’s hottest ever month on record, with the daily global mean surface air temperature record broken four days in a row (3–6 July). Jon Kudelka’s wry humour belies the devastation caused by this weather. Europe, for example, was affected by severe heat waves, prompting health warnings in several countries. Some areas around the Mediterranean experienced temperatures well in excess of 40 degrees Celsius.
