When Labor MP David Feeney resigned over dual citizenship concerns, it sparked a by-election in the Melbourne seat of Batman. With the Greens polling well in the electorate, it was thought the party had a good chance of upstaging Labor’s candidate, Ged Kearney. However, leaking and infighting within the Greens in the lead-up to polling day saw Greens candidate Alex Bhathal beaten by Kearney. After this result, Greens leader Richard di Natale called for a purge in the party.
