The public – and politicians – had a rapid-fire education on the Australian Constitution when news broke of the little-read Section 44, which states that members of parliament may only be citizens of Australia. Not surprisingly, given our multicultural society, it was revealed that our parliamentary representatives have ties to over 15 countries – providing some with an unexpected challenge to their electoral legitimacy. As Lethbridge points out, however, Yawuru man and Australian Labor Senator Pat Dodson had no such questions to answer.
