Since 1947, the Doomsday Clock has represented the likelihood of a human-made global catastrophe, particularly nuclear war. On 26 January 2017, following its annual November meeting, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists resets the Clock from three minutes to midnight to 2min:30sec. In the aftermath of North Korea’s announcement in September that it had detonated a hydrogen bomb that could be loaded onto an intercontinental ballistic missile, it was widely speculated that the world was closer than ever to Doomsday.
