Great Barrier Greef
Cathy Wilcox’s poignant cartoon captures the decline of the Great Barrier Reef following two consecutive mass bleaching events in 2016 and 2017 affecting a 1,500-kilometre area. Recorded by aerial surveys made by the Australian Research Council’s Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, the results prompted water quality expert Jon Brodie to claim the reef was now in a ‘terminal stage’.
Cartoonists are good with words as well as pictures. In this example, Cathy Wilcox is making a play on the words ‘Great Barrier Reef’. How does this convey her feelings about the issue?
