The thirty-three cartoonists who feature in Behind the Lines 2014 are powerful image and memory makers. They are shrewd, alert and ready to judge. At times they can be opinionated, indignant and mocking but for their own success and reputation they need to be engaging and persuasive.

Behind the Lines gives us an evolving vantage point from which to consider recent political history. The highly individualistic range of subject matter reminds us that caricature has developed into a powerful political weapon. For that reason the cartoons in this year’s Behind the Lines command our consideration and attention.
