The opening move

2013 starts with little to discuss, but the long summer holiday soon serves up a fine dish of unexpected fare; an election announcement that is a gift to Opposition Leader Tony Abbott and a thunderbolt to all. The 14 September poll date is etched in the nation’s mind but citizens are sceptical. Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s opening move backfires when her campaign strategy is criticised and the media turns its attention to Kevin Rudd. Within a month of the announcement the Labor-Greens political alliance dissolves and voters desert Labor during the Western Australian state election.
