The Freedom to draw

Conveying a simple political or social message in a single cartoon frame has endured despite radical changes in technology and communications. These cartoons by Noel Counihan and Will Mahony from the Museum of Australian Democracy collection serve as historic windows into the past, and demonstrate how contemporary issues were captured by the cartoonists of the day. They were selected because they focus on concerns over freedom of speech and the muzzling of debate by government, a central theme of this year’s Behind the Lines exhibition.
